Class Experience

In this four-session class, students utilize Minecraft’s combat system in different scenarios in which they will have to shift their focus in order to achieve their task. Students work together as a class in order to survive various situations in which they have to complete a specific task while fighting off various types of monsters. This forces them to switch their focus from different monsters depending on what is the biggest threat or if one if a classmate is in trouble as well as attempting to complete their goal.

Session 1: Learning to Focus with Minecraft
We will go over the basics and review controls for those who do not play on PC. Students will also begin target practice and focus on different targets.

Session 2: Focusing on Danger - Work Together to Survive!
Students will have to work together to survive waves of monsters. They will have to shift their focus between the bigger threats and which of their teammates need help to survive.

Session 3: The Nether: Can you escape the maze alive?
Students will be dropped into a maze where they will have to find six keys in order to escape. They will have to focus on their objective while working together to stay alive.

Session 4: Team Based PVP: Protect Your Monsters!
This is a team-based class where students will participate against each other. They will fight against one another who can score more points by defeating the other team’s towers first in the time limit that they are given.
Learning Goals
LearningWorks for Kids (LW4K) views gameplay as a foundation for children’s learning. LW4K LIVE classes leverage children's attention, persistence, and love of gaming as tools for developing executive functioning, social-emotional, and academic skills used in and out of game play. Our teachers are expert gamers, trained in psychology and education with the goal of making game-based learning into real world skills. But playing games is not enough! We apply evidenced-based strategic teaching principles and the LW4K model of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” to make gameplay “Digitally Nutritious” and help students identify, think about, and then apply the skills they are practicing in gameplay to the real world.

While our classes are great fun, there is always a teaching component included. Typically we spend about 10 minutes at the beginning of class, talking, watching video, and strategizing about our targeted skill (e.g. Planning, Time Management, Organization, Flexibility, etc). During gameplay which takes up the remainder of the class, we apply the “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” strategies to promote real world learning. Your kids will have a blast playing video games with our teacher and learn skills that will help them at home, school, and in their daily activities.

Parental Guidance
Students will be using our LearningWorks server to play together in the same space. In order to do this, we will need your child's gamer tag in order to identify them as members of the class. No additional purchases are necessary to access the server and your course instructor will walk you and your child through the process of joining if needed. The server is used as a communal space for building and sharing work within the game and is monitored by our class instructor at all times.
