Description

Class Experience

Feelings and emotions can be hard to identify, express and process. The first goal of the class is to establish this Outschool classroom to be a virtual safe space for students to authentically participate in the lesson. Together, guided by the teachers, students will co-create a working definition for the term “safe space” by considering the characteristics a virtual space requires in order to be an inclusive learning environment.
The health and mental wellbeing component of this class is facilitated by Cecilia Chau, an educator and art therapist. She is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), a professional member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) and a qualifying member of the College of Registered Psychotherapist of Ontario (CRPO). Cecilia has also received additional training in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
Students should bring regular (letter) sized unlined white paper (computer printer paper is good), a sharp pencil and a good eraser for drawing and any type of coloring art supplies they would like to use (colored pencils or pens or markers are best). This class requires the use of a standard school ruler that measures in either inches or centimeters or both (standard rulers of 12 inches or 30 cm required). The slideshow of the lecture will be provided to all students after the class so that they can continue to review how to use math to draw some interesting artwork. It is **required** that students have a webcam for this class so that they can show the teacher their drawings as they progress through the various activities. It is highly recommended that students practice holding paper up to their camera before attending this class, although this skill will be practiced in the class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
