It us up to each family if your learners keep their microphones on or off when they are not speaking. With this age group, I have found that learners often like to talk to their grownup some as they build if a grownup is nearby. In those situations, I do recommend muting while you chat together so that other learners can hear each other well. I also will sometimes mute other learners while one person is speaking so the speaker has a chance to share all of their ideas before we get to questions and complements. I will also teach builders a sign that means "same as you" so if they hear or see something that the person sharing has they they also have or like, they can sign that right away, even when the person is speaking...I guess that's the long way of saying that student communication/interaction in class is very important to me. Along with that, children having a chance to share all of their thoughts while speaking is also important. Please be sure your child knows how to unmute themselves or that you will be nearby to help with that during class as we may use the mute function some during sharing time.
