Building Better Bridges
Class experience
In this class, students will first learn about each of the 6 types of bridge structures, beam, truss, cantilever, suspension, arch and cable-stay. Each meeting as we study each type in detail, we will use the white screen together to analyze forces and make some basic calculations like real engineers! Then we will find items around the house to best replicate each type of bridge in our own version that we can share with the class. On the last day of class we will use our bridge building...
Students will learn to use creative and analytical skills to create working engineering models of the 6 major types of bridge structures as well as analyze forces acting upon them.
As a civil engineering designer, I helped develop solutions for real world storm water and sediment control problems. I also did site development in a huge shopping plan, and a bike trail project that my kids have seen completed. I truly believe that engineering is art, and art is engineering, and that is why I love teaching the next generation how to use their creativity to solve real problems.
Here is what is needed for this course: - 2 soup cans or other equally-sized, heavy items to be our pillars - Your thinking cap! We will also work interactively in real-time in a web based app called Tinkercad, a free website from Autodesk. You will need to sign up for an account for your student under a parent/guardian account, or let them use your parent account if they want to share their designs. The approval process takes a little while, but can be circumvented with a 50 cent registration fee. Here are some ideas of what you can use to build your bridges: - String, yarn, thin strips of fabric, or soft wire - Cardboard, paper plates, or other flat scraps, and scissors, and a parent, to cut them - Toothpicks, paper clips, or crayons - Marshmallows, clay, gummy candy, or fruit snacks - Small stones, marbles, rocks, or blocks - Recyclables
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Please keep materials appropriate for your child's age and abilities. Scissors, and wire cutters require parental guidance for their use at all times. Please assist your children where appropriate. I am a teacher, but I am also a mom. I understand that things come up. If you need to transfer your student, even after the first class, I am happy to do so. Please send me a private message and I will respond within 3 working days. If I cannot transfer your student into another section, I will gladly refund you as much as Outschool permits.
Hello! I am a homeschooling mom of 4, an algebra and writing tutor, and a STEM and crochet teacher. There is limitless information to learn and many formats to choose from. Experience has taught me that we learn better together. On Outschool, we...
