Building a Winning Argument and Playing With AI

This highly interactive class will cover the Toulmin method of building an argument. Students will learn this methodology along with ways to effectively research using both standard search engines along with AI via ChatGPT supervised by the instructor. Students will learn the Toulmin method, research skills and how to cite their findings, and how to ethically use ChatGPT and GoogleBard. They will also work on their speaking and listening skills.
Dr. Mara when she was a high school principal required her teachers to teach the Toulmin method believing that if learners know this approach they can be successful in any writing situation. She also has taught teachers how to effectively do their research using Google Scholar and maintain a reference list using MyBib, a free reference generator. Since January she has begun to include teaching teachers and students how to approach the use of AI and will be talking about this at the upcoming Festival of Education at Wellington College this July, 2023.
Homework Offered

Students with ADHD, Dyslexia and ASD will excel in this course as we will be using tools to help them improve their organization and communication skills.

We will use Google, Google Scholar, MyBib and students will be encouraged to use these tools as well. The teacher will demo how to use ChatGPT and GoogleBard but not require students to use these tools independently or on their own.
Sources for our debate will be derived from student research using Google Scholar mostly.
