Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Board game breakdown
Let's talk about all the different kinds of board games that we play. We will look at some examples and talk about themes for our game design. The assignment this week is to play as many path based board games that we can to figure out what we like about them. Get thinking about your theme and style of game you want to create! It's play and brainstorm week. Keep a list! We will do a quick redesign of an old game.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Theme/Mechanism
This week we get our theme decided on and talk about what elements we might use to create a basic board game. The assignment this week will be to decide on our theme, decide on spinner, dice or card movement and talk about complexity that we can add to the game to avoid runaway leaders. You will have the week to start working on the design of your board. You will need markers, paper, cereal boxes you can open up to glue your path onto and a glue stick.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Prototype/Playtest/Feedback/Fine Tuning
This week we should have a prototype. If you are still working on your game, that's expected. We can share what we've designed and we can talk about what works and so far what isn't working. Let's brainstorm solutions together. During the week I will post a playtest template. Use this to get feedback from the players of your game and we can talk about how to use this data to fine tune what you created.

Lesson 4:
Review/Extending/What comes next?
Review your game, what did you discover? Let's talk over the good things and the problems we encountered. Let's review all of the terminology and ideas we learned. Next steps for producing your game and getting it played.

🎲Instructor: Ms. Yvonne, BMus. McGill University. Hi! I'm a Metis artist, musician and micro-farmer. My experiences range from 10 years with IBM as a field tech to professional musician. I am a songwriter and a homeschooling mum of two kids and my current obsession is board game design. I've taken some courses through Vancouver Film School and really love what I've learned. I believe that child-led project based learning is the key to engagement. As an ND learner myself and a parent of an ND child, I believe connection and relationship are the first step in education. PBL or Project Based Learning allows us to incorporate all sorts of learning in one fun bundle of exploration.
