Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Did you know that 1/2 of our English vocabulary is made up of Latin words and roots? When we learn the meaning of the Latin roots, we build our knowledge of the English language....even for words we have never seen before.

In each class, we will learn two new Latin roots and four English words that correspond with that root. We will begin the class by learning the Latin root. Next, we will learn two new vocabulary words that go with that root. The children will learn what part of speech it is and see it used in a sentence. We will also look at synonyms and/or antonyms of the word. They will write the word on an index card and then try to make their own sentence with the word.

At the end of the class, we will play a game to review the words and give them more practice seeing, hearing, and saying the new vocabulary words.

Generic worksheets will be provided for the students to practice the words at home.

June 1: Week 1: prob and loc - locomotion, relocate, probable, probe
June 8: Week 2: organ and tech - technique, technicality, organization, organism
June 22: Week 3: class, grat - classical, classification, gratuity, ungrateful
June 29: Week 4: capt, stat - captivate, caption, stationary, reinstate

Hi, I'm Rachel Capes! 🌟

I have an Early Childhood Degree and a Master's in Literacy. I spent 12 amazing years teaching 4th and 5th graders, and Kindergarten SPED in public schools. I even got to be a math and literacy coach!

Now, I homeschool my four wonderful kids. One is gifted, two are right where they should be, and one has a learning disability. This time at home has given me a deeper understanding of all learning styles.

I believe learning should be hands-on and fun! Kids should be excited about math and reading.

In math, we use manipulatives, drawing, and algorithms to make learning engaging. When we meet more than once, kids get to share how they solved problems and explain their thinking.

In reading, we dive into books, discuss vocabulary, explore literary elements, analyze characters and plots, and make predictions. Everyone gets to share their thoughts and opinions while respecting others'.

I love to read, be outdoors with my kids, and this year we're learning to garden together. 🌱

I also teach World History and Geography at an accredited homeschool group.

Let's make learning an adventure! 🎉📚✨
