Build It, Write It in Minecraft- Exercises for the Reluctant Writer and Reader
Completed by 39 learners
Ages 7-10
Live Group Class
Activate the creative mind by building in Minecraft, then let the pen and quill flow through guided writer's workshops with a reading/writing recovery specialist.
Do you have a reluctant writer or reader, but they love Minecraft? Well, you have come to the write place, or is that right place? Studies have shown that when the frontal cortex is activated, that's where your brain creativity "centre" is- yes, that's spelled right, if you live in Canada. However, I will keep American standards of spelling in mind too. Did you know that the frontal cortex also is the same place where reading and writing come from too! That's why the greatest polymaths -think of Leonard de Vini, were very good artists, engineers, scientists and writers as well.
Therefore, each class will start with a themed 5 minute mini lesson, then students will be given 20 short minutes to build in Minecraft creative mode the theme of the week. Finally, they will close down their Minecraft games and write in their journals for 20 minutes, or use a talk to text program, if that accommodation is needed. The last 10 to 15 minutes of class will be for sharing their stories or short sentences and getting feedback from the teacher. Let the writing and reading begin!
I have been a reading recovery specialist for the last 6 years, I use a science-based approach to reading and writing. Please note, this class will have a wide range of many different abilities and levels of reading and writing from the students. Bullying or belittling of any kind will not be tolerated in this class. Students will be taught to celebrate their small or large leaps in their reading and writing journey - Learning takes time, especially in reading and writing. If your learner is not writing yet, no problem, they can draw and use on-set letters to tell their tale.
We will also have phonics lessons and grammar lesson, in addition to all the writing classes.

Regarding Minecraft:
Each student will need a Minecraft account. Class participants will do all Minecraft building on their own personal device. Any version of Minecraft (PC/Mac computer, Minecraft for Windows10, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or other gaming consoles, Minecraft PE for iPad, Android tablets, etc.) will work for this course. The purchase of Minecraft must be made separately and prior to the start of class. Students with a few weeks of Minecraft experience through play or otherwise will have the skills needed to complete the builds in Minecraft. Minecraft is a building tool for this course (think of it as digital building blocks). The lessons and information in this course are not official Minecraft products and are not associated with Mojang.
