Class Experience

All children begin their artistic journey with joy in the creative process. But somewhere around age 7 or 8 many have their self-confidence shaken, perhaps by an unkind comment from a classmate or by comparing themselves unfavourably with others with more "talent". This is often the pivotal point where children begin to think of themselves as "bad at art".
I am passionate about helping these children regain their creative confidence and enjoy making art again. Through fun and simple exercises that build understanding each session, they will learn tips for drawing from observation, how to add shading, and how to create texture using mark making.

"My 9 year old has really benefited and grown in confidence during his lessons. Linda is really a great teacher and my son has gone from having zero confidence and thinking of himself as ‘bad’ at art to producing some really great work and actively seeking out his own opportunities to engage in art outside of the lesson as well. He really looks forward to these sessions and it’s made a huge difference in only a few lessons. I would highly recommend."

In each lesson, I will demonstrate a technique (visible on a second camera) and guide them as they practise, giving encouraging feedback. My exercises are tried and tested over years of teaching art to children and young adults. Students will learn that the creative process is ongoing and every time they practise, they are helping themselves improve. Over the course of four weeks, students will grow in confidence and overcome barriers that have prevented them enjoying the creative process. They will get used to showing their work to others without fear of judgement.

At the end of the 4 sessions, each learner will receive a certificate via the classroom after the last session to congratulate them on graduating from the course. They will also be entitled to a FREE trial class of my weekly ongoing class Everything You Need to Know About Drawing.

I will remain flexible in approach and adapt exercises depending on the abilities of the students who enrol but a general overview of the course is below:

Week 1: Mark Making - creating texture and tone.

Week 2: Pencil shading - creating different tones - Light and Shadow.

Week 3: What to notice when we're drawing an object. Ellipses - drawing and shading a simple cylinder/mug.

Week 4: Simple still life - tonal drawing of a cupcake! Bringing together all the skills and techniques they have learnt.
