The students will learn how to build their own percussion instrument with three different features: a standard drum, a shaker, and a guiro. After building, they will use the instrument to make music together. They will do this by echoing patterns from the teacher, by playing a learned part to a song, and finally they will have the opportunity to be creative by making their own rhythm patterns. Students will be engaged with the teacher throughout the class, both during the building and the playing phase.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents,
I teach music classes for all ages, many of which can be taken without prior music experience. I also offer math tutoring and in the future hope to offer creative writing classes. Before coming to Outschool, I taught general music and band in public schools, as well as tutoring students in math and language arts.
I hold a master's degree in music composition, and a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. For over twenty years I have written music for a variety of instruments and genres. I have also been a regular performer in classical, rock, blues, and jazz bands as a tubist, trombonist, and bass guitarist.
Former principals have described me as "awesome" and "a blessing" to my students, and I always strive to create a learning environment where they feel supported, safe, and happy.
Besides music, my hobbies include video games and writing fiction. I even wrote a fantasy novel ten years ago!
