This class is about building and running a city using the Cities Skyline computer game (available through steam (PC), Xbox, playstation and switch. I will be using a version with all the DLC but it's fine if students only have the base game.

The game involves starting a city from scratch (or you can use a city you have already built, if you have the game), placing roads, zoning houses, offices and industry but that is only the start. Your citizens will need water, electricity, education, healthcare, garbage collected, parks, buses and lots more. It's not easy building and running a city so I will be screen sharing my own city and giving advice on problems that might arise. Traffic jams can a big problem but also citizens getting sick, running over budget and even asteroids hitting your city! But not to worry we can solve all these problems by sharing ideas and solutions. Students will also have the opportunity to screenshare their own cities.

Week of 10/09/2023: I wil be starting a city from scratch but students can use a city they have already built if they wish. Looking at the basics such as road layout, zoning, water and electicity supplies (these skills are used throughout the process of creating a city)
Week 2: 17/09/2023: Building the city up further. Looking at citizens needs such as education, garbage disposal, crime etc.
Week 3: 24/09/2023: Expanding the city further. Looking at public transport, managing a budget and more.
Week 4: 01/10/2023: Further expansion of the city. Looking at mods for the game, tackling traffic problems and more.

Further weeks will inlvove expanding our cities or starting new ones and swapping design ideas. Desgining a city is a never ending task and there will be much to do, sorting out traffic jams, dealing with forest fires, making a profit, maybe you want to attract more tourists, maybe you want to make a river run through your city or make your city a green paradise and much more.

This is an ongoing class and students can join in at any time. No knowledge from previous lessons is needed. Also If Students already own the game they can use a city they have already started building and if anyone is stuck then I or another student can offer help.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been working with children (Wales, UK) for about 20 years in various settings.

I have attended a Rudolf Steiner teacher training course and also qualified as an after school club leader. Mostly I have experience with home educated Children of all ages in a voluntary capacity. For 15 years I helped run a social group for home educating families and for the past 10 years (still doing this) I have helped with a large family camp for home educating families. This has involved a bit of everything. I've helped with animation classes, sport event and art classes. I have also taught making clay bread ovens and making bamboo pipes from bamboo. For the past couple of years I've helped out with a forest school club, mainly teaching the children (8-11 years) string tricks and making survival bracelets.

My hobby is art which I've been doing on and of for 20 years. For the past year I've been teaching art online classes to a group of home educated children as what I mostly enjoy is passing on skills (whatever the subject) to others. But beware sometimes my cat joins in the online sessions!
