Class Experience

Calling all humans that shares my affinity for elf culture! Grab a hot cocoa and a roll of Toll House cookie dough, and join me for a Christmasy review of fractions, decimals, and percents. You do not need to have seen the movie to benefit from this class. But, you might want to watch it (or watch it again) in order to pick up on all the movie quotes.

Together, we will solve fractions, decimals, and percents problems presented to the class on a power point. Work paper will be provided for students to print, or you can just use a piece of notebook paper. Students will have an opportunity to participate in class by suggesting methods for solving the problems, and explaining how a solution was found. Bring a calculator. This class focuses on correctly setting up problems rather than completing the calculations.

Prior experience with fractions, decimals, and percents is recommended as this class will review these skills.

The best way to spread some Christmas cheer is.... to solve math problems from a Christmas movie! Don't be a cotton headed ninny muggins! Be sure to wear your favorite Christmas sweater!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
I began teaching in 1978 by forcing my little brothers to "play school" during summer breaks. I began my paid teaching career in 1991 by teaching at a public high school in Michigan. In my over 30 years of experience teaching, I have also taught at a community college, homeschool co-ops, an alternative school, and a virtual online school. I retired from teaching high school math at a public high school in 2018. Now, I enjoy being home to homeschool my son, play with my grandchildren, and teach students online from all over the world.

I graduated from Western Michigan University in 1992 with a degree in Mathematics, History, and Education. In 2005, I earned a Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit. I am certified to teach mathematics in the state of Michigan.

I believe that students learn by DOING! My class is a safe place to try, make mistakes, and try again. My classes I incorporate plenty opportunity for practice, and I provide meaningful individualized feedback for students. During class I encourage active participation from each student, and provide ways for shy students to participate in ways that make them feel comfortable. I will work with your student to help them be successful in math.

Please message me if I can help you meet your math educational goals.
