Description
Class Experience
We will learn basic grip and posture as well as rhythm patterns beginning with simple quarter, eighth and sixteenth note patterns along with their corresponding rests. Learners will have the opportunity to compose their own grooves comprised of the patterns learned in class and perform either solo or along with their favorite music. Learners will need to have the maturity to listen when required and play in groups and individually when required; able to show respect for the teacher and other learners in the class.
As a band director for nearly ten years, I have had the privilege of teaching many instruments, including percussion. In addition, I had the opportunity to do bucket drumming with kids during Vacation Bible School. Bucket drumming is a great way to learn basic rhythm, patterns and hand position that will translate to playing other instruments.
Learners will have a weekly assignment to practice for about ten to fifteen minutes at least five times a week and will be given two composition assignments they will need to spend about ten to thirty minutes writing. Optionally, learners can practice "grooving" along with appropriate music that they enjoy as well as creating and decorating their bucket drums to their personality and liking.
Learners will need to purchase or acquire a 5-gallon bucket with a lid and will need a pair of drum sticks. In addition, they can (optional) gather homemade instruments that we will discuss and share with one another during class. Learners will also need a chair a metronome or metronome app that can be downloaded onto a tablet or phone. I use Simple Metronome on Android, but any metronome that is easy to use will work. Learners will be provided with staff paper for their compositions as well as pdf. exercises each week with the different rhythm patterns to practice. Here is a set of drum sticks you can order on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2xZys8w
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Simple Metronome
Learners will have the opportunity to share their diy designer drums and perform for one another individually and as a group. Our final class will be a recital where we will showcase what we have learned.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Learners will have the opportunity to "groove" along to one of their favorite songs. Please be sensitive and help your learner choose something that is family friendly with appropriate language and appropriate messages.
