Class Experience

This week students will gain knowledge on general theatre concepts as well as specialized knowledge about musical theatre. We will have various tasks within the classroom as well as a live 55-minute class each day for one week. You will learn:

-Dance and Sing to your favorite Broadway Songs
-Character exploration of your favorite roles
-Create your own scenes

We will conclude the week by performing the songs and dances we learned.

Day 1: Introduction to Musical Theatre Camp plus Sing-a-long and vocal rehearsal. This day includes an overview of the week, including some info about the musical. We will also learn various vocal warm-ups to help with vocal technique. Depending on the show, we may also have groups that work together to self choreograph a portion of a song for the full show.
Day 2: Students will continue working on vocals for our song. Students will begin working on their student-created scenes. We do student-created scenes so that students do not feel pressed to "memorize" the material, and they also get a chance to explore and create various characters of their own choice whether relating to the chosen show or as past students have done, completely unrelated. I will go to each group and help them with creation/scene writing/and improvisation. This day we will also discuss technical theatre, and students have the option to create and/or put together a costume and backdrop for the final performance.
Day 3: Dance rehearsal and continue scene/vocal rehearsal.
Day 4: Music, Dance, and/or Acting rehearsal depending on the needs of the show.
Day 5: Dress rehearsal for our performance and in the last 15 minutes of class you will perform the final performance like you are on a real Broadway stage in your living room!

Please note: Students will learn vocal techniques using a piano, but during the live performance they will be "muted" and will sing live in front of the parents. This is only due to the limitations of zoom due to lagging. I also recommend students record their songs after learning it so they can show to friends and family separate from the live zoom performance.

This class has no prerequisites and is a great introduction to musical theatre. Although students should be self-motivated and have a desire to learn musical theatre. There is significant "outside practice" including rehearsing the dances, songs, and scenes on your own outside of class to prepare for the next day.

This course is very similar in style to stress-free non-competitive musical theatre camps and activities. Students who are looking for a laid back experience whether they are experienced or not will enjoy this camp. This camp focuses on fun, building an ensemble, and making friends while sharing a passion for musical theatre. Students looking for an advanced skill-oriented musical theatre experience should look at my advanced technique and audition prep courses. That being said, the skills of working together, devising, and creating are all important for theatre artists to have and students of all levels and aspirations will benefit from this experience.

My teaching style is very fun and supportive. I love inspiring students and helping them grow as performers. This is a very hands-on class and space to move will be required. You should also use headphones during vocal rehearsals.
