Broadway Musical Theater: From Idea to Opening Night!
Class experience
Musicals are the heart and soul of Broadway and the American theater. This class will allow students who love musicals to learn the specifics of what it takes to create and produce a successful musical. And, hopefully make some friends along the way. Our first class will look at what we know about musicals and their history in America. We'll review how they're developed and what it takes to actually make it to a Broadway production. We'll talk about the logistics of the regional theater...
Students will learn the history of American musical theater. Students will learn critical thinking skills as they examine popular shows and look at what their strengths and weaknesses are. Students will discover shows they have not already been exposed to and increase their knowledge of the musical theater canon. Students will learn how to work together and value contributions from others as they write a musical theater treatment as a team.
I grew up with the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber and have most recently performed the entirety of Frozen 2 with my daughter. I was the first MFA student at my university to direct a musical for his thesis project. Since then, I've directed around forty musicals with professional and student casts (middle school, high school, and college levels.) I worked on the creation of an original musical about lemmings in York, England, and spent two years as the assistant director for the original tour of RENT. My favorite project was working on a still-not-on-Broadway musical written by Barry Manilow which enabled me to live a childhood dream of singing the chorus of "Copacabana" with him. I love working with young people and learning from them as much as I can teach them. Theater people are the best people. Always. Please read my complete teaching bio, and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
