16 in-class hoursClass Experience
Each class will feature an example of musical theatre from Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas to modern hits like "Hamilton." Each class will begin with a short discussion on the development of musical theatre, building on what we watched the class before. We will then watch a movie version of the show we are discussing. While watching, we will have an active chat where we will react to themes and ask questions about what we are seeing. Once the movie is over, we will go over the themes that emerged in the chat and transition to the next class' show. Because these shows vary in the length, the length of our classes will also vary. The end time of each class will be posted in the classroom well ahead of time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Musical theatre has an inconsistent history regarding the portrayal of race, gender, violence and sexuality. Through my work as an arts educator and public historian, I have extensive experience broaching these topics in age appropriate and sensitive ways. I engage in professional development to stay on the forefront of the best ways to approach these challenging topics. If there is anything in the above parents guides that you wish to discuss ahead of time, my inbox is always open.
