They were distinguished members of England's elite who worked for MI6 by day. But secretly this group was spying for the Soviet Union! This course examines the Cambridge Five, who they were and what they did in history.

Class experience

US Grade 7 - 10
This class is taught in English.
By the end of this course, learners will have examined the members of the Cambridge spy ring, what information they passed on, and the effects of their espionage. They will have been introduced to the British agency MI5 and MI6, and what these agencies did during World War II.
I hold a BA in History and am completing an MA in International Relations. I wrote my undergraduate thesis on Soviet espionage in the US, and have taught a variety of history courses on Outschool to middle and high school students.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This class will discuss important events during World War II. Learners enrolled in this class do not need to have prior knowledge of the war (although it is certainly a bonus), but they will need to be comfortable talking about war. Also, members of the Cambridge Five were spies who betrayed their country. While the stories of spies is entertaining, it is important that students realize these were real people who betrayed their countrymen, and their actions impacted history.
This course is inspired by the writings of British author and historian Ben Macintyre, specifically his book "Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal".
