Class Experience

In this course the students will learn and share what it means to become a big brother/sister.
We will cover topics such as:
*Changes to expect (such as less time with Mom/Dad, stinky diapers, lots of crying,
*Ideas for how to help Mom/Dad.
*Ideas for how to play gently with the baby.
*Ideas for how to help when the baby is upset
*How to be quiet when the baby is sleeping and why that is important.
*How to express our feelings (jealousy, sadness, loneliness, anger, joy, etc.)
*The best way to get attention when we we need it versus the wrong way to try and get attention.

In this class, I will ask the students different questions about what they are expecting and what they already know about newborn babies. Then those responses will help me to know how to guide the discussion so that we cover the topics that they need most. I will also have a Google Slides presentation that I will share with them to help guide the discussion and make sure that we at least touch on all of the topics listed above.

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
For 8 years my students called me Mrs. Rice, but you can call me Kat. I am a former elementary school teacher, an experienced online ESL teacher and a homeschooling mom of 3. I teach classes for 3-5 year olds, and 1st -5th graders. My classes topics include preschool/ kindergarten skills, reading skills, math skills and life skills such as becoming an older sibling, being a role model, and expressing feelings. I also teach hands-on science classes.

I believe that learning should be fun! My classes are interactive and your child will leave wanting to show off what they learned! I believe that learning is also effective when it is discovered and when it’s applied to the world around us. I believe in activating as many possible parts of the brain as possible when learning. Therefore, your child will be encouraged to talk/sing, dance/move, listen, silently think and share ideas! I believe that ALL children are capable of learning. I believe in giving children the time, support, encouragement, and strategies that they need to be successful. I believe in helping gifted children to continue to grow in their knowledge. I believe in giving parents ideas and access to resources so that can continue the learning at home.

I am the proud mom to a very hyper and very smart 4 year old. Although his behaviors and lack of self control and focus would probably hinder him in the traditional classroom, he is excelling in homeschool. If he was to attend public school he would be starting 4K this fall. But since he is homeschooled, he is already in kindergarten and only spends about 90 minutes a day “doing school.” I also have a 2 year old daughter who is very calm, very focused, very smart and very sensitive. Because of homeschooling she gets to watch her brother learn and she learns right along with him. She already knows her letter names, most of her letter sounds, all of her colors, she can count to 20 and put digits 1-9 in order. I am also the very tired Mommy to a baby boy born in August 2020.
