I have helped many students on their creative journeys serving as a TAG Coach and Enrichment Coordinator. Creating engaging and educational lessons focused on creativity is my passion.

After years as a full-time musician (an endeavor I began as a teenager), I gravitated towards teaching and obtained a master’s degree with a focus on creativity and education. I have formally and informally studied the creative process, various theories in creativity research, and bibliotherapy. My master's thesis focused on using storytelling (song-lyrics included!) to help students gain self-awareness.

In addition, I've taught one-on-one guitar and song-writing classes for 10 years. Exposing young people to music is one of my favorite things to do!
45 minutes in class, and an estimated 0-1 hour preparing lyrics to share with the class.
Please come with lyrics to share. Preferably these lyrics will be from the featured artist of the week, but not necessarily. (For example, if a student joins a class to be exposed to an artist, I simply ask them to bring a set of favorite lyrics from another musician.)

In addition, I encourage students to attend with some way to take notes (tablet, notebook, or whatever's their style).
Informal assessment will be used in order to gauge student understanding of biographies and interpretation of lyrics.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
While discussing the biographies of musicians, we will inevitably be discussing serious topics such as eating disorders, divorce, mental health, and drug use. We will be discussing these topics in an age-appropriate manner, focusing on the influence these struggles had on the creative works.

Also, I ask students to bring lyrics free of explicit language. While some of these artists do have swear words in some of their songs, I ask students to bring lyrics that do not include swear words.
If specific songs are featured and played during class, they will be provided by me and specific to the artist being discussed.
