Description
Class Experience
In this ten-week reading comprehension course 3rd grade students will meet for 2 thirty-minute sessions each week. The first session each week will involve an introduction to the reading strategy followed up with some guided practice using the strategy. The second session, we will dive into grade level reading activities across the curriculum using the strategy of the week and spiral in prior weeks strategies. Activities throughout the course will include the following: group readings,...
Reading words and comprehending what they say are 2 different things. To connect the two things students need to learn strategies that aide in this comprehension. My goal in this course is to provide useful strategies that can be used when reading to help students become active readers. When used on a consistent basis, these strategies will just be a natural part of the reading process.
I am a certified 3-8 teacher with additional training in ESL and inclusion. I have experience teaching in the classroom and online.
I will encourage the students to read 20 minutes each day using the weekly strategy and share at the beginning of each class an example of how they used it. Sharing is not a mandatory part of class; however, practicing the strategies is the only way to integrate them into every day reading.
A notebook, pencil, and colored pencils would be beneficial for use in some sessions.
I will assess students understanding through the activities that we do within each class and provide weekly feedback on students understanding and overview of the weeks strategy through email.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
In this course some sessions will use additional resources such as Peardeck, Kahoot, and Nearpod.
