Bridge to Algebra 1 | Preparing You for High School Math

This ongoing math class gives students the basics needed to succeed in Algebra 1. Each week we tackle a different concept from Algebra 1. Perfect for the summer before taking Algebra 1 or as a review for current Algebra students.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Welcome!
What will this class cover?
We tackle a fundamental algebra 1 concept every week. We will cover core Algebra 1 concepts at a slower, discussion-based pace (for example, What will happen if you multiply "x" times "x," or How do we find the vertex of a parabola?).

Who is this class for?
This math class is perfect for students preparing to enter Algebra 1 within one year OR for students who are currently in Algebra 1 and want extra support/review.

Are there any required materials?
Some weeks learners will be provided with an optional printable handout (posted on Sundays), and other weeks learners will just need a pencil and paper.

What is your teaching style?
I act as the facilitator of learning rather than just the giver of information. The focus is on problem solving through discussion, and this works well with reluctant learners AND advanced learners! I give lots of examples and am interactive with learners.

What is the schedule?
Week 1 (April 14) Product of Powers + Power of a Power
Week 2 (April 21) Quotient of Powers
Week 3 (April 28) Power of a Product
SKIP the week of May 5
Week 4 (May 12) Power of a Quotient
Week 5 (May 19) Negative Exponent
Week 6 (May 26) FOIL Method Using Distributive Property
Week 7 (June 2) Factoring GCF From Algebraic Expressions
Week 8 (June 9) Simplify Radicals
Week 9 (June 16) Add & Subtract Radicals
Week 10 (June 23) Multiply Radicals

More weeks will be added, though the day/time is subject to change.

NOTE: Though we cover several Algebra 1 concepts, this is not considered a full algebra 1 course. The concepts do not build upon one another, so feel free to join any time.

More on my teaching style:
My goals are to teach to the students' needs and encourage students while they learn these core concepts. I accomplish this through setting high expectations and making sure students feel seen and heard. Mistakes will be made, and that is okay! It is all part of the learning process.

The method of teaching will be a mix of "I do, we do, you do" (which means I will be demonstrating the content first) and giving the students problems to try out on their own first. I often use questions to allow students to think critically without giving the answers away. I love student-to-student interaction and will be incorporating it as much as possible through online discussions. That looks like giving students the opportunity to share their thought processes and answers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
The courses I offer center around core math topics in pre-algebra and algebra. I like to focus on the important building blocks students need to master in middle school and early high school in order to succeed in high school and beyond. Some of these topics cover proportionality, equations, inequalities, basic geometry, algebraic expressions, and arithmetic.

I am a certified teacher for grades 4-8 math and have over four years of professional experience teaching math to students ranging from grades 3 to 12. I taught seventh grade math while getting my credentials and taught my first year of seventh grade math at an amazing school. Though I left full-time teaching when I became a mother in 2019, I have continued to pursue my passion for teaching math part-time via various platforms.

My philosophy that drives my teaching is that every student is a unique person who is worthy of my time. I have the patience to work with students who are struggling in math and the ability to push students who are naturally inclined towards math. My goals when working with students are to teach and encourage.

When I'm not teaching/tutoring I can be found snuggling my babies, spending quality time with friends and family, and playing disc golf with my wonderful husband.
