Class Experience

Does your learner love to build? Then have your child put those building bricks to use learning about fractions!

In this interactive class, learners will use building bricks to lay a strong foundation for fraction skills. This course will cover 4th grade Common Core Standards for Number & Operations - Fractions. Learners will be instructed using the research-based and highly effective CRA approach, moving through the concrete, representational, and abstract stages of learning to help them understand both the concepts and the procedures. Practice sheets (to be uploaded by the teacher) will need to be printed for each class.

Throughout each class, learners will be assessed in a variety of ways to determine how well they are understanding the skills taught. Learners may also be required to complete some additional practice outside of class hours.

To best meet each learner's needs, breakout rooms may be used for group work or for individual support from the teacher. If your learner may not participate in a breakout room, let me know before the start of the course so that I can adjust my lesson plans accordingly.

***The entire unit sequence for Brick by Brick: Grade 4 Fractions is listed below. In order to help with budgeting, I have broken the unit into parts by topic. It is highly recommended that learners take all parts in sequence. This class covers only Topic 4 skills - Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators.***

***PREREQUISITE SKILLS: Learners should already know how to express a fraction as a picture or number.***

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
