This is a class that I have given to many completely new students of English. It also is extremely helpful to students that know some English their study has not been structured. So, they are afraid or embarrassed to speak. (I have seen many students like this.) It might seem elementary, but we will work on the first building block of any language: the six questions (who, what, when, where, why, and how) and I am, you are, he is. One cannot build a home without the cornerstone, the same is true of a language. I present the 12 words and we keep practicing. I then show the student/s how to use the words to build a sentence. We practice again. I believe that that is the most important—that is practice, practice. After a while of practicing with me, I will have the student use the words to start a conversation. They don’t have to have them memorized, they can look at the list they have before them. They will have success. That success will help them take the next steps. Practice is extremely important. During my Chinese ESL activity, I was told by my teaching assistant that my education majors were speaking more fluently than the English majors. Why? practice, practice, I believe in helping my students use their new language.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the six questions and the verb to be (1, 2, 3rd person). They will then learn how to use the words to construct a sentence. They will be able to carry on a conversation for 1-2 minutes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As you can see by my photo, I like to keep a smile on my face and try to put a smile on my student’s faces. I have been subbing all classes for 3 years after several decades abroad as a diplomat, where I tutored intermittently and taught ESL at two Chinese universities. I travelled to 40 countries. I do especially well because I speak Spanish and Mandarin and use their native language to help with pronunciation.
An undergrad history major, I also studied for my California teaching credential, but left just a few hours short to pursue my advanced degrees. I always kept in touch with the academic community tutoring English and honing my teaching skills. Teaching ESL to Chinese university students, was especially gratifying when I heard that my education majors were speaking English better than comparable English majors.
I returned to the U.S. and began working in San Diego schools (specifically Chula Vista, La Mesa/Spring Valley, El Cajon, and Imperial Beach), teaching all classes to TK-8th. Reading stories and teaching history and civics are my favorites. It is in these schools that my love for teaching these young students was reconfirmed.
I try to encourage students. I have a very high empathy quotient and students relate to it. They know I care. I use my travel experience, as well as my academic knowledge to keep a child’s interest.
