This book is set within the historical context of the Cold War under the harsh dictatorship of Joseph Stalin. Although there is mention of people (including Sasha's mother) having been executed in prison, the story is told from the viewpoint of a 10-year-old and there are no graphic depictions of torture or death. All discussion of basic world events surrounding the story will be age appropriate.
