Throughout the four week course, we will have main focuses on help improve, support and guide each student in trumpet playing. Lessons will be completed through pre-recorded video, presentation and example. Learners will be asked to send video recording of practicing techniques to the teacher in order to get more student-specific support. Students will then be required, with the help of Flipgrid, to record for at least one other student a response that includes: 1. One thing they liked about...
Students will learn the main basic skills necessary for a solid brass instrumentalist. They will learn fingering for various notes on the trumpet, how to produce sound from this wind instrument as well as improve their ability to read music and build their personal stamina when playing. Students will work on tonguing "too" vs. a slur attack and will be taught how to read music to help give the cues while playing.
Each week students will be asked to practice the skills taught within the lesson. Improvement is hard to come by when no practicing is done, especially when playing the trumpet. Typically, one page will be assigned and it is suggested for a beginner student to practice at least 15 minutes per day to help improve technique and ability. The assignment pages will be addressed in the course lesson so the student knows how the song should sound when played at the end of the week.
Trumpet, mouthpiece, necessary cleaning supplies for the trumpet, a stand to hold up sheet music or lesson books. I will include the lesson pages for the week and upload them on to the classroom site. Any other supplemental material will be loaded there as well (such as fingering charts, theory sheets)
Learners are assessed through observation of skills via recorded video. The instructor will be looking at posture, mouthpiece placement, breath support, tone quality and overall ability to sustain a note and read music.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
