Description: Students will read the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Class time will be used to discuss the novel, good vs. evil, and other themes present in the novel. We will attempt to answer the questions: Why are vampires so popular in pop culture? What were the original fears of vampires and why did people of old believe they were real? On whom did Stoker model Dracula? We will also look at some of the events happening in the year 1897 when the novel was first published. Students will read 5 chapters a week for the first 5 weeks and the final 2 chapters the last week of class before the final class. The first 5 chapters should be read before the first day of class. Chapters 1-5 for discussion on the first day of class, chapters 6-10 for the second class meeting, chapters 11-15 for the third class meeting, chapters 16-20 for the fourth class meeting, chapters 21-25 for the fifth class meeting, and chapters 26-27 for the last class meeting. Classwork will consist of in class discussions, vocabulary worksheets for the following class, (to be done as students read) reviews for understanding, and character analysis. Other Details
Parental Guidance
There is mild violence (blood, vampires!) This class is a "Book Club" style class, which means I give a lot of background information and the learner is encouraged (but not required) to discuss their interpretation of the material.
Supply List
Materials: A copy of the book titled "Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (Signet Classics) is required. (a copy of just Dracula can be substituted) The book can be ordered from Amazon.com new or used anywhere from one dollar used up to 8 dollars new. We will be looking at the literary composition and excerpts of Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as well before we begin reading Dracula in its entirety. Note: The book with all three novels can be used in all three of my novel study classes.
