This course delves into the psychological manipulation, criminal behavior, and societal impact of cults. We will examine real-life case studies of notorious cults involved in violent crimes, fraud, and other illegal activities, as well as the long-term effects on victims. Potentially Disturbing Content: Violence and Crime: The course includes descriptions of violent crimes committed by cult members, such as murders and assaults. I will not include details for the shock factor. Only details necessary for understanding the case will be given. Students will be researching a case on their own and may come across such details during their research. Psychological Manipulation: Topics cover the manipulative tactics cult leaders use to control followers, which may be distressing for some. Trauma and Mental Health: The course explores the psychological effects of cult membership, including PTSD and challenges faced by survivors. This course may not be suitable for younger students or those sensitive to graphic content or distressing topics. Students will encounter real-life case studies that may evoke emotional reactions, particularly when discussing psychological manipulation and the effects on families.
