Class Experience

During each 25 minute lesson we will sing/ listen to a song about the brain as a warm up. We will then explore the brain together using online resources such as: http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=152&id=1528, and prepared ppt summaries. During class will do an interactive game or hands on activity to help solidify the information we have learned. Throughout the course I will be using big words for the brain such as cerebellum and cranial nerves with an explanation of what they mean.

Week 1: What is the brain?
We will explore images of the brain, learn what the brain is made of, where it is located, what it looks like, and what its purpose is.

Week 2. The parts of the brain.
We will explore a diagram of the main parts of the brain, where they are located, and what they do. We will be introduced to the names of different parts of the brain and we will develop our own nicknames to remember them.

Week 3. Plasticity and growth mindset!
We will learn what brain plasticity is in order to develop a growth mindset. We will learn about some children who have overcome great difficulties by adapting their brains to function despite damage. We will have a discussion about how the students have overcome their own challenges and how that could be related to brain plasticity. We will talk about the power of yet.

Week 4. Developing your brain.
We will be introduced to and discuss techniques and exercises that can help develop different areas of the brain. We will discuss why we think different behaviors, like exercise and socialization are important to the development of our brain.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an understanding of the brain, its parts, and what it does.

Parental Guidance
We will be looking at some studies of children who have brain injuries during week 3 in order to understand Brain Plasticity. If this happens to be a trigger for your child please let me know. To accommodate parents schedules the class may be run as a 50 min class that meets once a week, or as a 25 min class that meets once a week for 8 weeks, instead of the usual 2x a week 25 minute class format. Message me if you need clarification on the section you have signed up for.

Teacher expertise and credentials
When I took my first psychology course in University I was hooked on the topic! I couldn't believe it had taken me so long to learn about my brain! The program I was in would not allow for a minor, but that did not stop me from taking every psychology course I could fit in my schedule! The more I studied psychology the stronger the feeling grew that it was a topic that should be learned early in life. If I could improve my own mind and memory so much as a late teen/ young adult, imagine how much impact a psychology course could have on a child's learning? Imagine how much it could change the life of someone who is neurodivergent if they could understand brain plasticity and adaptability? Psychology is a passion for me, that is why I am offering this course, and that is why I hope you will sign up!
