US Grade 2 - 5
In this one-time class we will explore specific optical illusions (stereograms, illusionary motion, literal illusions etc.) and learn how they work. We will also work with some of these optical illusions, allowing students the opportunity to annotate on the screen and work as a group to discuss what is going on in the picture. With each illusion, we will learn how certain patterns, colors and images are arranged in particular ways that "trick" our brains into seeing something that is not actually happening. The class will provide space for critical, imaginative thought as students attempt to explain what they are seeing and why they think their brains are processing the optical illusions the way they are. We will create a simple optical illusion craft that requires minimal supplies. No reading is required of the student. My class setting is a relaxed, fun, open space for students to be able to discuss and express their thoughts about what we are learning. I encourage student interaction with not only myself but with their fellow classmates. Everyone is expected to be respectful and listen to one another but also feel like they have the ability to share their own thoughts and opinions. I believe learning should be fun and try to provide a space for that to happen.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about optical illusions and gain a basic understanding of how our brains tend to process different images and why those images are sometimes distorted. They will learn communication skills and practice critical thought as they express what they are seeing. They will learn how to create their very own basic optical illusion.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of California Riverside
Hi! I love to teach classes that are fun and promote discussion and creativity. In all of my classes I mix critical thinking with out of the box thinking so that the kids learn something brand new! I find the best way to do this is by using books, video games, trivia and other interactive components to keep them engaged and wanting to learn.
My passion for critical thought stems from my degree in Philosophy. The integration of pop culture in my classes is rooted in a lifetime of toy collecting, video game playing, and during my time as a staff writer for an online comic book review site. Over the past five years I have created community-based, pop-up craft classes for parents and children that integrate culture and thought, and I am excited about the opportunity to share these types of activities with my students!
Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband, son and three cats! I like online gaming and spending a lot of time crafting.
