Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Welcome to "Boys Need Self Care Too". I am a health and physical education teacher at a middle school in Houston, Texas. I also coach football, basketball, and track. Self care is a topic that is extremely important. It has become even more necessary as we face unprecedented challenges that have completely altered our normal routines. Unfortunately many young people are having a hard time adapting. In addition many are not quite familiar with how to navigate these changes to continue to take good care of their physical, mental, and emotional well being. The goal of this course is to offer some helpful suggestions that will hopefully prove beneficial.

This class will consist of short lecture providing information, lots of discussion, review games, video clips, and two wellness checklist for students to reflect on their own personal wellness. We will also discuss safe and appropriate ways to take good care of ourselves, as well as appropriate ways to cope with any challenges that may come up.

Topics:
Section One- Physical Self Care
- Importance of Exercise
- Importance of a Regular Sleep Routine
- Good Hygiene Practices
- Eating Healthy
- Dangers of Stress on the Body

Section Two- Mental and Emotional Self Care
- Importance of Mental and Emotional Wellness
- Suicide Prevention
- Self Esteem and Self Worth
- Reducing Stress
- Avoid Drugs and Alcohol
- Healthy Activities
- Reaching Out

This class is designed to provide a safe and respectful environment for the students to discuss self care needs. This class will allow for them to communicate with me as a health and physical education teacher, but will also give them the opportunity to connect with peers who are facing similar circumstances. There is no required experience for this class. I do hope that this class opens the opportunity for parents to have further discussion with their child about taking good care of their physical, mental, and emotional well being.

Parental Guidance
This class will address overall physical, mental, and emotional wellness. A sensitive topic that will be discussed in this class is suicide prevention. Statista.com reports that over the last 20 years, the number of boys that committed suicide is more than three times higher than the number of girls. Therefore, I wanted to make sure to include this topic. We will discuss the Suicide Prevention Techniques mentioned on www.bethe1to.com. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
Supply List
The only materials needed for the course are the two "Self Care Checklist" that will be attached in the classroom section. We will also be playing Kahoot, so the students may want to consider a separate device. It is not necessary as you can also play using the browser on your computer.
