Do you want your kids to thrive no matter what life throws at them? This course will teach your child the skills needed to not only bounce back when facing a challenge, but how to bounce forward with resilience, confidence and optimism! Kids who learn resiliency skills are equipped to navigate the ups and downs of life so that they can reach their potential. Resilience can be broken down into specific skill sets that can be learned and strengthened, just like a muscle. The process of building resilience is not reserved for those experiencing significant adversity- it can be learned by anyone at any age, and may even prevent future issues. Kids who learn and practice resiliency skills have an increased likelihood that they will be mentally healthy and feel happier as they navigate the often stressful, rapidly changing world. When kids are weak in resiliency skills, however, it can show up as being unable to regulate their emotions, they may experience more meltdowns, have difficulty with focus and learning, feel held back by unhelpful thoughts, or have feelings of low self-worth or self-doubt. In some children, it can lead to anxiety and other poor mental health outcomes in the future. During this 8-week course, your child will learn several practical and simple-to-apply strategies for building resilience. The course is meant to equip kids with the skills they need to respond with confidence and optimism to the challenges that they will inevitably face. During the course, students will learn: Class 1: How to use a specific emotion regulation tool to become more aware of their emotions and feelings in their body in response to various experiences. Class 2: How to practice emotion regulation strategies and relaxation exercises to be able to stay in control of their emotions and feel confident in their ability to get back to a calmer state. Class 3: The concept of choosing a "growth mindset" to better understand that they have control over their learning and behaviors, and apply it to developing a habit of expressing gratitude. Class 4: How to develop healthy thinking habits by being aware of unhelpful thoughts and applying a strategy to shift toward more helpful thinking. Class 5: How to communicate and listen more effectively so that they feel heard and understood, and to increase connection in their relationships. Class 6: How to handle uncomfortable conversations and conflict using assertive communication. Class 7: Students will learn a specific problem-solving strategy so that they feel more confident in their ability to find helpful solutions and overcome challenges. Class 8: Identify personal strengths so that they build on their sense of self-worth and consider their ability to contribute. Also, discuss the importance of a support network for strong resilience. These skills all contribute to a more resilient kid! When life knocks you off course, resilience helps you to not only bounce back, but also to bounce forward and get stronger on the inside! Classes are designed to be interactive and sometimes silly as we engage in conversations and games about these topics, use worksheets to practice, and occasionally watch brief videos to illustrate the skills. *NOTE: The content of this class includes all of the material taught in my 6 popular one-time classes, plus some additional content. Having a consistent group of kids each week tends to encourage deeper engagement and support for each learner. I also offer this same class in the "ongoing" format: https://outschool.com/classes/bounce-back-buddies-resiliency-skills-training-for-kids-nG5VS7rP?usid=HQ2DyQyi&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving.
I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
