Class Experience

This is a great class for kids who want to learn how to draw plants, kids who are interested in botany and kids who are interested in learning to identify plants.

Students will need a sketchpad, pencil, kneadable eraser and fine line artist pens such as Microns or other brand. A magnifying glass or loupe is helpful for seeing close up details of plant structures.

We will start out with learning the basic drawing skills needed to start drawing. Each week we will build on those skills, practicing what we've learned and adding more steps to create a plant portfolio.

Simple botanical terms will be discussed to introduce terminology as we look at and draw the plants. Plant families, genera and species will also be touched on over the course of the class.

Since it's best to draw from a live specimen vs. a photograph, students will be asked to search out a few plants throughout the class for drawing. Plants chosen will be plants that are easily found in yards, parks and local conservation areas.

Other Details

Supply List
Sketchpad or blank paper
Pencil
Magnifying glass or loupe
Ink pens - can be a Micron 02 or other artist pen of similar size as well as a finer tip such as a 005 and a heavier tip such as an 04
Colored pencils or watercolor pencils
Plants - each week students will need to have live specimens of plants to draw. This is important as details are missed when viewing photographs. I have selected plants that should be easy to find in most locations.
Week 1 - an acorn and oak leaf plus another tree leaf of choice
Week 2 - a pine cone
Week 3 - a daisy family flower (daisy, sunflower, echinacea, etc...)
Week 4 - plant of choice

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Kristine. I love teaching herbalism and botanical drawing and I'm excited to bring these two loves to the online teaching world. I am the creator, author and illustrator of the popular online herbal zine, Herbal Roots zine, which teaches children about the medicinal uses of herbs through fun activities like games, puzzles, songs, stories and recipes. I began this zine back in 2009 when I was looking for resources to teach my youngest 2 children, which I was homeschooling, when I realized there wasn't much available for teaching kids about herbs. It is now in its 10th year of publication.

I am a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild and in addition to writing the monthly ezine, I teach classes in my community as well as all over the United States to both adults and children. I have created and ran kid camps at herbal conferences around the country as well and have run a kid's camp out of my home during the summer. I also see clients out of my home office and make all natural herbal goat milk soaps which I sell in local stores and online.

When I'm not homeschooling my youngest two (which are now in 8th and 9th grade) I am usually drawing plants or walking my dog Lulu in the woods while taking photos of the plants that are growing there.
