I am excited to be sharing the book "Eddie Red Undercover" Mystery on Museum Mile" with my students. It is funny and engaging. The main character, Edmund is brave smart, and resourceful. His brilliant best friend Jonah who has ADHD, OCD, and other learning differences is Eddie's partner in solving the case. The book is an exciting mystery that takes place in New York City and includes a diverse group of characters. The reading level is Lexile 710 which translates about a third-grade...
Students will develop reading fluency by enjoying a book at their reading level with like minded peers. They will discuss key themes of the book and apply these to their own experiences. They will use a variety of graphic organizer and note taking strategies to demonstrate their comprehension of what they have read.
Hi, I'm Bridget Smith. I hold a Master's Degree in Education from the University of California Santa Cruz. I am also a person with ADHD and the mom of three kids some of whom have ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. I have also worked with students with ADHD, autism, and other learning differences as a robotics coach, Pokemon club leader, classroom teacher, and camp counselor.
Students will be expected to read about 70 pages in between class meetings. Students will have a simple reading reflection graphic organizer to complete based on their reading for the week that will be shared in class. Be sure to purchase the book "Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile" before class begins. This book is a 710 Lexile which translates to about a third-grade reading level. Each session we will be discussing questions based on the reading assignment. If you want your child to get the most out of this class be sure to get the reading done before class. Due to copyright restrictions, my own read-aloud will be kept to a minimum. I never ask students to read aloud in my classes because this is difficult for dyslexic readers. For Dyslexic learners, parents can share the book as a read-aloud or co-read (Parent reads a page, kid reads a page). Another option would be to use text to speech using an app like Voice Dream Reader or a Kindle reader. (See how to do text to speech on a Kindle here https://tinyurl.com/yabxvuug). Students can read along with the text to speech. Students can also enjoy the book in audiobook form them participate in the discussion. If students are using this class for homeschool credit they are expected to complete in-class assignments and notes and create a portfolio that will serve as proof of class completion.
Book Purchase is required for this course! You can purchase "Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile" by Marcia Wells published by Houghten Mifflin Harcourt from Amazon or your local bookseller. If you child has dyslexia or any reading challenges, it is highly recommended that you purchase an ebook version of this book or download it on Bookshare. In my experience as a teacher and a mom of a dyslexic kid, your child will be able to read this book more easily and enjoy the content more if they can read in enlarged print. This book is available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle ebook. A Kindle ebook can be read on most phones and tablets through the Kindle App. You can purchase the book here: https://tinyurl.com/y79tdy23 Print out the graphic organizers provided with this course if possible. Have paper, pens, pencils, and something to color with handy.
A narrative evaluation or letter grade is available upon request.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
One of the supporting characters takes ADHD medication. If students bring this up, I will advise them that this is beyond the scope of our course and that they should consult their doctor for advice on this subject. The main character works with the New York Police and interrupts a robbery so there is the threat of violence. A copy of "Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile" by Marcia Wells published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is required for this course.
