Books for All Kids: Halloween Edition- Boo and I Mean It! Book Club
In this three session class, students gain reading comprehension and fluency by Junie B Jones for some Halloween hijinks. Our last class meeting will include a special Halloween celebration. This class is designed to support students with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

This class is for all kids and is designed to provide extra support for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning differences who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension. In "Junie B Jones Boo and I Mean It!" learners will follow Junie B as she tries to overcome her fears so she can have the best Halloween ever. Students will read three chapters of this accessible graphic novel in between sessions. Students will respond to what they read using graphic organizers and class discussion to support writing development and reading comprehension. Throughout the class, students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own lives,challenges, and successes. Day 1: Secrets and Scary Stuff Opening: What makes something scary? The teacher will develop student engagement by reading the first three chapters of the book out loud. Focus for Discussion: Which characters were introduced to in these first three chapters? What do we think about the grown ups in Junie's life? Why is Junie so scared? Activity: Students complete the reading reflection sheet for the teacher read aloud Homework: Read Ch 4-6 . Do Reflection Sheet. Day 2: Clowning Around Opening: What was your favorite Halloween costume and why? Focus for Discussion: Why does Junie act the way she does? How do other people respond to her? Do you think the responses of the neighbors and Cinderella are fair? How would you respond? Activity: Write a journal entry about Halloween night from Junie's perspective. Feel free to include illustrations, Don't worry if you get the spelling wrong the first time. Just cross out and correct it like Junie B! Homework: Read Ch 7-9 . Do Reflection Sheet. Prepare to wear your Halloween costume and bring a treat to our next class meeting. Day 3: Surprise Endings Opening: Share a Halloween tradition that your family enjoys. Focus for Discussion: How do Junie B's parents make things better? What are other ways that Junie confronts her fears and deals with the scary stuff throughout the book? Activity: Plan a fun Halloween Activity to do with family or friends using To-do list strategy. You can eat your yummy treat while you work on this project.
Learning Goals
Students will gain fluency and comprehension by reading and discussing the novel. Students will practice organizing and communicating their ideas using graphic organizers, creative writing, and other strategies.

Parental Guidance
Junie B is a very irreverant character. She may appear disrespectful to the adults in her life, although it is not from a place of rebellion. She is also learning to use correct grammar so she sometimes speaks incorrectly.
Supply List
"Junie B Joes: Boo I Mean It!" by Barbara Park is required for this class. Students may use e-books, hardcopy and paperbacks, or audiobooks to read and comprehend the text. Handouts will be uploaded in into the Outschool classroom before some sessions. Paper, markers or colored pencils, and pens or pencils are great to have on hand for class activities. Students are invited to wear their Halloween costume to the last class session as well as bringing a Halloween treat to eat during our activity time if they wish.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Students will need their own copy of "Junie B Joes: Boo I Mean It!" by Barbara Park. Students are welcome to read the book in hard copy or on e-book or audio book. Text to Speech accompanied by reading can be a good strategy for dyslexic learners as enlarging the print in e-book format.
