Self Paced Book Club-Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down

In this fun four session novel study, students gain reading comprehension and fluency . Class includes graphic organizers and other supports that make it ideal for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities.

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students are responsible for reading 50-60 pages of this easy to read graphic novel in each week and responding to reflection questions posted in our online classroom.
Assessment
Self Paced Learners can request a comprehension review Kahoot! for each lesson. A self assessment will be offered during the final class session.
Grading
Narrative Evaluation provided upon request for self paced learner if requested within one week of the end of class. The evaluation will be based on the self assessment, class participation, and the work submitted in class.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This class is for all kids, and  includes supports for learners with learning differences who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension.  In "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down" by Jeff Kinney students will follow the adventures of Greg Heffley in his quest for Halloween candy and fame.  Students will read sixty pages  of this accessible graphic novel per week.  

Students will respond to what they read using graphic organizers and class discussion to support writing development and comprehension.  Throughout the class, students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own lives, challenges, and successes.


***Be sure to let me know if you need additional time to complete the course.  I can extend the teacher comment period.

Learning Goals

Students will gain fluency and comprehension by reading and discussing the novel.  Students will practice organizing and communicating their ideas using graphic organizers, creative writing, and other strategies.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
The Greg Heffley Show
 Greg shares some interesting theories about his life, and you get to create a graphic novel page or infographic that describes one of these theories. 
Lesson 2:
The Quest for Candy Corn
 It's Halloween and Greg will do ANYTHING  to win a jar of candy corn.  You get to draw a book cover for Greg's favorite book series. 
Lesson 3:
Lies and Consequences
 Roderick other family members take teasing and "white lies" a bit too far.  You will practice using a graphic organizer template to record these lies and their consequences. 
Lesson 4:
Expect the Unexpected
 Roderick and Rowley's attempt to film a scary movie has some surprising results.  Create a story board for your own scary movie.

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities with a fun low reading level book. Students can use graphic organizers, create videos, or draw to respond to class posts and videos.
Supply List
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down" by Jeff Kinney is required for this class.  Students may use e-books, hardcopy and paperbacks, or audiobooks to read and comprehend the text.

Handouts will be uploaded in into the Outschool classroom before many sessions.

Paper, markers or colored pencils, and pens or pencils are great to have on hand for class activities.
