This ongoing book club will motivate readers to try new, high-quality books! Learners will be challenged to improve comprehension skills and think more deeply about what they read. Each class we'll dive into student-led discussion and complete a quick, in-class written response to the book. We'll also play Blooket and compete to be the "Book Boss" of the week! Learners will: -Strengthen reading comprehension and analysis skills including summarizing, inferencing, predicting, and making connections. -Learn will learn new vocabulary words and practice using context clues to identify unknown words. -Discuss plot and story elements. -Practice communication, cooperation, and leadership skills. -Respond to reading orally and through writing. They will also have a fun, memorable experience that celebrates the joys of reading!
Learners will read a book before each class. They will write down 3-5 brief conversation starters weekly, such as something they wondered while reading or an interesting new vocabulary word they discovered.
Learners will need the book we are discussing for each class.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please consider each of the book selections and determine if they are an appropriate fit for your child. -New Kid, Book 1 is about a 7th grader who is one of the few students of color in his middle school. -From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is a story of two children running away and living in a museum. -Number the Stars is set during WWII and involves historical events that may be too scary or confusing for some learners. Cigarettes and beer are mentioned briefly. Our group discussions will be age appropriate and focused on the books. Comments or questions that are inappropriate will be redirected. Students will be asked to navigate to https://dashboard.blooket.com/play and enter the game ID I provide them to enter our closed group game. They do not need an account to participate.
