US Grade 1 - 3
In this one-time class, I will teach how to make a simple pop-up book and we will brainstorm story and book ideas together. Then learners will get started writing or drawing in their homemade books. As learners work on their books, I will check-in, providing support as needed, and encouraging learners to share ideas with each other. I provide suggestions that are relevant to the books that are being created in class. This may include how illustrations help to tell the story, story sequence or what types of details might be included in a non-fiction book. Learners may not complete their whole book during our time together, but everyone will have the opportunity to share their work before the end of class. Bookmaking can be a motivating way for young learners to use their developing literacy skills. I find that when children are part of a community of authors/illustrators, they inspire each other to try out new ideas which they can continue to work on after class is over.
Learning Goals
The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in creative and meaningful ways both in class and afterwards. I believe that learning to write is a process that develops gradually with support, time, and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The book each learner creates in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing words, sentences and/or paragraphs). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Portland State University
I have a Master's degree in early childhood and inclusive education with an emphasis on literacy. When I was a child I loved making books and I have encouraged my children to turn their stories into books as well. I have been an educator for 20 years and am passionate about teaching literacy skills that support a lifelong love of reading and writing. Storytelling and book making are some of my favorite ways to support literacy development. I see all children as capable individuals who are motivated to learn when their interests are honored and they are encouraged to make their own discoveries.
