Class experience

US Grade 1 - 3
The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in creative and meaningful ways both in class and afterwards. I believe that learning to write is a process that develops gradually with support, time, and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The book each learner creates in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing words, sentences and/or paragraphs). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.
I have a Master's degree in early childhood and inclusive education with an emphasis on literacy. When I was a child I loved making books and I have encouraged my children to turn their stories into books as well. I have been an educator for 20 years and am passionate about teaching literacy skills that support a lifelong love of reading and writing. Storytelling and book making are some of my favorite ways to support literacy development. I see all children as capable individuals who are motivated to learn when their interests are honored and they are encouraged to make their own discoveries.
Paper, scissors and something to draw/write with.
Optional materials: tape, glue stick or multi-purpose glue
Scissors are needed to make this pop-up book. If your child brings scissors to class and they still need supervision, please make sure you are nearby. Thanks!
