Book-to-Movie Club: Is the Book Always Better?

In this Book-to-Movie Club we read and discuss one middle-grade novel over the course of three weeks, then discuss its movie version during the fourth week. Students improve their close reading skills, understanding of story structure, and ELA terms such as theme, figurative language, plot, setting, climax, resolution, narrator, point of view, etc.
As an educator, I bring 20+ years of professional experience centering stories and storytellers. I currently teach literature and creative writing courses as an adjunct professor for an established university while freelancing as an editor (& educator!). I've worked as a youth services librarian, k-8 substitute teacher, content writer, arts journalist, and fiction & nonfiction editor of a literary journal. I have a BA, MFA, and MLIS.

Sometimes I use approved third-party tools Kahoot (quiz game) and YouTube clips. When I use YouTube I share my screen. Clips are rarely over 3 minutes and always relevant to the story. When I use Kahoot I create the reading comprehension quiz game myself and students play the game together towards the end of class.
