Book Study: I Have Lived a Thousand Years, Growing Up in the Holocaust
Class experience
I Have Lived a Thousand Years, by Livia Bitton Jackson is the true recollection of a strong, determined, and courageous survivor. Born Elvira Friedman, Livia Bitton Jackson was just thirteen years old when her village was invaded by Nazis. Her family was deported to Auschwitz, and eventually to other concentration camps, because they were Jewish. Elli fought for her own life, alongside her mother. They stood by each other, and both survived, despite the horrific conditions. As she summarizes,...
Students will learn what The Holocaust was, and read the lived experience of a Holocaust Survivor.
I am a teacher certified for grades K-8. I also minored in History at the University of Arizona. I took several classes on Judaic studies, and religious studies as part of that program. I have also taken a college level class specifically on The Holocaust. I am knowledgeable on this book, and this topic. I have read it many times, beginning at the age of 11. Livia Bitton Jackson has a tremendous strength, and courage. She details her experiences as a survivor very eloquently, and her story stuck with me. I am also a certified school counselor for grades pre k-12. I know that I am able to handle this serious topic with appropriate sensitivity, and multicultural awareness as a result of my education, experience, and training. We will use reliable sources like the United States Holocaust Museum, and other primary sources if conversations lead us to questions that require further research.
A copy of I Have Lived A Thousand Years, by Livia Bitton Jackson (ebook, paper, or audio is fine).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course is for older and mature students. It is not appropriate for all learners. The book is the memoir of one young woman's experience fighting for her life in concentration camps during the Holocaust. It is a true account. Some details are very tragic. There is discussion of death, violence, and acts of genocide. From the Forward: "My stories are of gas chambers, shootings, electrified fences, torture, scorching sun, mental abuse, and constant threat of death. But they are also stories of faith, hope, triumph, and love. They are stories of perseverance, loyalty, courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and of never giving up." We will handle this topic, and these difficult conversations with the utmost cultural sensitivity, and sensitivity to students. We will leave a few minutes at the end of each class for students to debrief and share anything that they may need to discuss before leaving class, so they can get those feelings out.
