Book Making: Japanese Stab Binding Books
Class experience
In this 50 minute class we'll create a handmade book use a Japanese style stab binding. This class is a natural followup to the Orizomegami paper dyeing class I offer but is a perfect stand alone class for students to what to create a handmade book that is a more clever and skillful than accordion fold books. Students will look at samples, learn to cut, assemble and bind their books in one class.
Stephanie is an artist and k-12 arts educator who enjoys creating her own hand bound journals and altered books in her personal art practice.
tapestry needle (wide eye) embroidery floss push pin ruler 8.5 x 11 *decorative paper/scrapbooking paper/patterned paper etc (card stock or thinner) 8.5 x 11 copy paper (4-6 sheets) cut in half (approx 4x5) binder clips/paper clips/bulldog clips/spring loaded clothes pins *If you've taken my Orizomegami Paper Dyeing class, your dyed papers make excellent book covers (these should already be 6"x9") size) ** Please have 2-3 tapestry needles pre threaded but do not have knots at the ends. This prevents the delay and frustration associated with rethreading the needle in class if it slips from the needle.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students should have some very basic experience with threading a needle as a pre-requisite for this class. I will also upload a handout for the basic stab binding technique to the classroom immediately following class with step by step instructions for those that do not finish or need additional reminders.
