It is known throughout the book that Rodeo and his daughter Coyote are traveling the country in a school bus with no particular route in mind as they deal with the loss of Rodeo's wife and two daughters, who are also Coyote's mother and sisters. So there is an element of grief blended in throughout the context of the novel.
