In our study of the novel Stranded by Ben Mikaelsen, the learners will have in-depth conversations based on the exposition of this realistic fiction. This story, set in the Florida Keys, after the main character suffers an accident and also has worries about the possibility of her parents separating, opens with a moment of powerful excitement in which two whales are in need of saving. This action pulls the readers in and holds them through the rest of the book to see the edge of your seat...
Students will gain a stronger learning of the research that goes into creating a novel, Exposition including setting, characters, rising action, conflicts, turning points, climax, resolution, themes. Vocabulary in figurative language will also be focused upon. This book is learners a great opportunity to reflect on their own lives and the decisions characters in the novel make which can help us learn about making decisions and facing conflicts in our own lives.
