As this book takes place in Louisiana in the 1950s and is a realisitic fiction novel, content of diversity, prejudice, segregation is presented in a very age-appropriate manner . These elements occur in the novel in a way that allows for outstanding discussion and, a perfect opportunity to impact learners with information as the characters experience it. A main portion of the plot is the main character having learning disabled parents, which impacted the way they were treated and sometimes bullied by others. The author weaves a story of compassion and care where the daughter learns how smart and capable her parents are and bullies are dealt with in a way that will positively impact the learners. These topics are dealt with compassion, empathy, and lessons learned throughout the novel.
