In "Book & Cook Club: Nate the Great Mini Mystery, Plus Pancake Party!", students will engage in an interactive novel study based on the original book in the Nate the Great series. The class will culminate in a pancake making and eating party! This is a multidisciplinary course emphasizing English language and culinary skills. Please note that active parent/guardian participation will be required for Day 3. Students will learn through a combination of teacher read alouds, independent and/or guided reading, peer discussions and teacher-led activities. Through the use of live video meetings (including hands-on activities), printable resources and lively conversations, students will delve into the mysterious world of Nate the Great. Class time will be structured in the following way: Day 1: Students should come to class with "Nate the Great"; no reading needs to be completed before our first meeting. Class expectations and schedules will be reviewed. We will take a "book walk", previewing the text as a group. As a group, we will review "Detective Talk" terminology, helping to prepare us for the mystery ahead. We will also learn interesting facts about colors, which are a critical component of Nate's detective work. Students will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and preferences for colors aloud. Before class ends, we will start reading the book together. Required homework after Day 1 class concludes: read the remainder of "Nate the Great", completing the book in its entirety. Day 2: Prior to attending Day 2, students should read the remainder of "Nate the Great", completing the book in its entirety. During class, we'll work together to complete open-ended comprehension questions, a character match challenge, and multiple choice comprehension questions. While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of the Nate the Great book. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. We'll celebrate the completion of our novel study with a variety of detective-inspired games! Day 3: Prior to attending Day 3, students should work with a parent/guardian to prepare all needed ingredients, in the correct measurements, for our pancake cooking and eating party! Throughout the course of this 3-day class, students will enjoy an emerging reader book, learning how to organize and speak about their thoughts, and safely preparing delicious stacks of pancakes to enjoy.
