Book Club: When Zachary Beaver Came to Town
Class experience
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town is a National Book Award Winner. In this book club, we will read and discuss this wonderful book about stereotypes, friendships, and compassion. Set in a small town, the main character, Toby, will have to learn to accept the fact that his mom had to leave him to pursue her dream. The Vietnam War will also be addressed and studied, as Toby's best friend loses his brother to war. Luckily, an amazing phenomenon occurs when Zachary Beaver comes to town. Learners...
I taught this book many times in middle school. It is a wonderful story about friendship and compassion. I certainly understand this, as I was made fun of for being fat as a youngster. The Vietnam War also is something that I lived through and have studied. The facts only will be presented to students and discussed only in the context of the book. Baptism is also a very small part of the book and will be discussed factually.
Participants will need their own copy of the book When Zachary Beaver Came to Town (Kimberly Willis Holt)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
One of the themes in this book deals with the worry and loss of one of the character's brothers. This brother is in the Vietnam War. As a person who grew up during this time, and as a teacher with a minor in history, I have studied this war and will present only factual information about the war. Another theme is about the curiosity of kids who are around someone who is very different from themselves. Zachary Beaver is billed as the "fattest boy in the world". We will discuss compassion and friendship as the story unfolds. Another section will deal with baptism, in the sense of baptism being something that Zachary Beaver feels that he needs to fulfill a promise to his mother. Baptism will also be presented in the factual sense only. Google Classroom is used for the student copies of the guided reading questions. They can be printed off for use while reading. I have also met the author, Kimberly Willis Holt and listened to her speak about the inspiration for this book
