Class Experience

Sometimes a reader finishes a book and doesn't know what to read next. Or sometimes they get stuck in one genre or one author. Book talks with peers are a great way to not only share what they are reading but to also get recommendations from their peers of other books that may spark their interest. I will also have my top picks to share with students as well.

This class is taught in English.

Students will demonstrate comprehension skills.
Students will improve communication skills including active listening and expanding on their ideas.
Students will have fun and share their excitement about reading.

I have been an English teacher for 24 years and have used book talks successfully in my class. I have students that have graduated that will still do book talks for me and are eager to add to their list by listening to others' book talks.

No given homework, but of course, students will need to read at their own pace and prepare for their book talk.

The student can determine what they need to present their book talk. Some suggestions include the book, notes, visual representations, props, etc. but nothing is required and students may just want to simply talk about their book.

Informal assessment performed as students present their book talk.

30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.

Parents should review the book that their student would like to share to ensure that it is appropriate for this age group and then after class, they should review the list that their student may have made from other books that were shared by other classmates.

I will provide a preparation packet for enrolled students to guide them in their book talk.
