Description
Class Experience
We will be reading through Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. There are no prerequisites to the first class. The first class will introduce the book and author. We will go over the timeframe of the book and the author's life. From there each class will follow a couple of common elements. We will go over interesting words, phrases, and vocabulary that the learners will find in their reading in the coming week, and we will go over the characters that they will meet. There will...
I always thought that I'd been a reader all my life. Then, after a conversation with my mother, I was reminded that I really took off reading on my own after an operation that I had when I was 9 years old. I was stuck in a hospital bed for a week so my mom started reading me the Little House Series. She only got through the first book, "Little House in the Big Woods" and through about 3 chapters of the second book "Little House on the Prairie" while I was in the hospital. After I came home to recover, she had to go to work and didn't have quite as much time to read to me. I waited for a few hours and really wanted to know what happened next, so I read a little, and a little more. By the next day, I'd finished the book. I had to wait 3 more days before we could go to the library and I could fill my box with the next book...and the next...thus this reader was born.
Students will be reading the book and preparing discussion questions for class.
2 files available upon enrollmentStudents will need the book Understood Betsy in some form. The class readings are based on the Sonlight Version (linked below) and I do prefer a paperback that they can take notes in, but any version of it will do. Here are a few links to some options. 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The word "darn" is used in Chapter 9 and the character is aware that it is a "bad" word for her.
I've compiled a Student Book with the discussion questions and optional activities for use with the class. You may want to print it or at least have it available for your student during class.
