Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Travel back in time with Jack, Annie, Ms. Carol, and friends! In this exciting, adventurous book club we will meet once a week to discuss the Magic Tree House books in order. Each book stands alone, so students can choose to join us for their favorite book, or stay for all of the fun!

Books will be read ahead of time, before class. There are ten chapters in each book. The books are also available as audiobooks! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, playing fun games rand ending with a round of “Would You Rather” questions, all related to the book.

This class is designed to be fully interactive and students are expected to be fully engaged. If interacting with teacher and peers is uncomfortable for your student, this class is not a good fit for them.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Please be aware that a few Magic Tree House books require parental guidance. These books are “Thanksgiving on Thursday*, “Buffalo Before Breakfast*, and “Shadow of the Shark*. These books require critical analysis and the following areas of concern will be addressed in class: inaccurate descriptions of historical events, racism, stereotypes, cultural inaccuracies, harmful and inaccurate descriptions of Native Americans, racist/stereotypical imagery, and biased perspectives. Teacher Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach the true and accurate version of history I was not taught as a child. Racism or racial stereotypes is never acceptable to me, and neither is a white-washed version of American History.
Supply List
Students will need the Magic Tree House book we are discussing that week. The book must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads aloud to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
