Welcome to our Weekly NOTEBOOK OF DOOM Book Club—an immersive literary adventure for young minds! In this ongoing course, students will delve into the captivating world of the NOTEBOOK OF DOOM book series, combining the thrill of storytelling with a comprehensive focus on essential literacy skills. Each week, our dynamic book club will explore a new NOTEBOOK OF DOOM title, offering an exciting platform for practicing reading, enhancing reading comprehension, and refining various reading strategies. This course is good for homeschoolers, avid readers, after-school reading practice or ESL students. The course goes beyond the pages as students develop language arts proficiency, including literacy, fluency, vocabulary enrichment, and writing skills. Engaging discussions will foster a deeper understanding of the characters, plots, and themes, enhancing both critical thinking and communication skills. Additionally, students will practice grammar within the context of the stories, reinforcing their understanding of language structures. Course Details: We will focus on a new book each week. Students should read the book at home before coming to class. The NOTEBOOK OF DOOM books can be read in any order, so learners can join at any time. Each class will consist of four parts: 1. Greeting and opinion of book 2. Comprehension and vocabulary 3. Reading skills and strategies* 4. Grammar practice** 5. Writing prompt (if time allows)*** *Reading skills and strategies will change/rotate each week. Some of the skills include: prediction, inference, main idea and details, cause and effect, figurative language, sensory images, making connections, summarizing, asking questions, character traits, plot diagram, similes and metaphors, compare and contrast, fantasy and realism, facts and opinions, story elements, visualization and theme. **Grammar practice topics will change/rotate each week. Some of the skills include parts of speech, nouns, verbs, adjectives, synonyms, antonyms and adverbs. ***Writing prompt topics will change/rotate each week. Some of the topics include letter writing, persuasive writing, narrative writing, poetry and how-to writing. Classes do not build upon each other. Materials will be displayed and used in a Google Slide presentation that is screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners should have their own copy of the book for this course. We encourage readers to read and review the book at home prior to class.

We have experience working with learners of all abilities, including ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ASD and more. Learners of all abilities are welcomed and encouraged to join us in class. Please contact us for more information.

This course was created by and used with permission from Ms. Ashley. Ms. Ashley graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s degree, majoring in both education and mathematics. Later, she went on to also earn a TESOL teacher’s certificate. Ms. Ashley currently homeschools all five of her children. She has taught over 10,000+ virtual classes in all subjects over several years on different platforms. She has 18+ years of tutoring/teaching experience, both virtual and in-person, as well as 16 years+ of experience as a volunteer teacher, tutor, and coach in schools and classrooms. In addition to teaching, Ms. Ashley is part of curriculum development and review team for an online ELA and math teaching/tutoring company, where she also serves as a Learning Partner and Academic Advisor for incoming students. Other related experience includes ELA and math tutoring the University of Connecticut Student Center, substitute teaching in the public school system and working for five years as a Financial Controller of a litigation support firm with offices across the United States. Ms. Ashley truly values each and every student, and she hopes to help them to find a love of learning.
