Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
The Mysterious Benedict Society is an engaging children's series full of puzzles, friendship, and adventure. In this four-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions and engaging activities as we read Trenton Stewart's third novel. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class.

Whether your student has never read the series or is an enthusiastic fan on their third re-read, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. I will also read aloud important or exciting parts during class to enrich our discussion.

The reading schedule will be as follows:

Lesson 1: chapters 1-5 (pages 1-96)
Discussion and activities will focus on character and setting. What has changed for Constance since their last adventure? What can we infer? Students will practice using inference to understand character.

Lesson 2: chapters 6-11 (pages 97-188)
Focus on foreshadowing and plot development. What hints does the author give us at what might happen?

Lesson 3: chapters 12-17 (pages 189-298)
Focus on plot and predictions. We will work together to fill out a plot map with what we have read so far. After discussing this section, we will predict what we think will happen next.

Lesson 4: chapters 18-23 (299-end)
Focus on themes developed through the story: Truth, friendship, and bravery.
Learning Goals
Students will sharpen their literacy skills and foster their love of reading!

Parental Guidance
The Mysterious Benedict Society is a lighthearted adventure. The style of the writing and the unrealistic world in which it is set makes it feel less real. However, there is an element of danger in the adventure. Almost one year on Outschool and loving every minute of it!

I am passionate about building authentic positive relationships with my students. By modeling healthy relationships and creating a safe place for them to flourish, I hope to give my students life skills beyond the content I teach. I create safe, inviting spaces for kids to build relationships with other students, practicing the skills of empathy in the context of a caring community.

My husband and I have two daughters and two dogs. I love to read, bake, and knit (but not all at the same time!). I can't wait to see you in class!
